Choose the ink, choose the block

Each collection is one ink and one carved block. Pick one and the block on the cloth above changes with it, and the shop shows only what is printed in it.

The ledger

Printed this season

Twelve pieces, each printed by hand, so the repeat wanders a little and the ink sits heavier in one place than another. Hold the loupe to the cloth to see the weave.

From charkha to chhapa

Five hands to one kurta

A length passes through spinners, weavers, carvers, printers and the dye vat before a tailor ever sees it.

  1. Spin

Cotton from Kutch is carded and spun on the charkha. The yarn is a little uneven, and those slubs are what you feel.

  2. Weave

The yarn goes to a handloom in Bikaner and comes back as a bolt of khadi, washed and beaten in the river.

  3. Carve

Every block is carved from teak in Pethapur: an outline block, a fill block, sometimes a third for the second colour.

  4. Print

The cloth is pinned flat on a long table and printed block by block, one press of the palm each, eight hundred to a length.

  5. Dye & dry

Dabu lengths go into the indigo vat; the rest are steamed, washed in the river and dried flat in the sun.
