Fleece to skein

One strand, four hands

Scroll and follow the yarn from the shepherd’s shears to the ball band.

  1. Shear

In late spring the Gaddi shepherds shear their flocks on the way up to the high pastures; in Ladakh the pashm is combed from the goats by hand.

  2. Wash & card

The fleece is washed in the stream behind the studio, dried on the roof and carded into soft rolls, sometimes blending three or four flocks.

  3. Spin

Spinners in Naggar and Leh spin on the charkha and the takli, then ply two strands together for strength and bounce.

  4. Dye & skein

Walnut husk, marigold, madder and indigo in copper pots; then each lot is skeined, swatched and given its ball band.
