Stitched by hand. Aged by you.

Pricking the holes for a flap, Periamet

Slide the buckle along the strap, or use the arrow keys, to age the leather.

  1. Pale and even, the colour the hide leaves the tan pit.
  2. Honey to chestnut, glossy where your hand rests.
  3. Deep brown, burnished edges, every scuff a story.
Bags

Four kinds of bag

Everything we make hangs on one of four tags. Pick one to bring its bags to the front of the bench.

The bench

On the bench now

Twelve pieces from the current run. Each is cut and stitched by one maker, so the grain on yours will be its own.

From hide to bag

One thread, five steps

A satchel takes about two days at the bench. Scroll, and follow the thread through it.

  1. 01

    Choose the hide

Vegetable-tanned sides come from a family tannery in Jajmau. We pick each one by hand, looking for the grain we want on the flap.

  2. 02

    Cut & skive

Patterns are traced and cut with a round knife, then the edges are thinned so the folds lie flat.

  3. 03

    Prick & saddle-stitch

A pricking iron marks the holes; two needles on one waxed linen thread cross through each hole, so one broken stitch never runs.

  4. 04

    Edge & burnish

Edges are sanded, painted in three coats and burnished with a bone folder until they shine.

  5. 05

    Set the brass

Buckles, D-rings and rivets are set by hand with a press and a mallet, and every strap is tried before it is wrapped.
