PatangPack of five · tissue on bamboo
The everyday fighter kite of the pols: a square on its point, a bamboo spine and bow, and a paper tail. Light enough to lift off a terrace in the faintest air.
PatangPack of five · heart patch
The same quick patang with a heart pasted on by hand in a second colour. Ask for one colour or a mix; each pack comes tied with cotton.
PatangPack of five · paper tassel tails
A slightly larger patang with a moon patch and a crêpe-paper tassel at the tail, which steadies it for a first-time flyer.
Cell & softRipstop nylon · no spars · bridle and bag
A soft cell kite that fills with wind and holds its shape. Nothing to snap, nothing to assemble — unroll it on the beach and it climbs.
Cell & softTwo cells · carbon frame
Two open cells on a light frame, so it sits high and steady in a sea wind and barely moves its head. Packs flat into its own sleeve.
Cell & softRipstop · 4 m long · ring and swivel
A long striped tube that rolls and ripples under a kite line or on a pole on the terrace. It tells you where the wind is before you launch.
Delta & birdRipstop · fibreglass spars · 30 m line
A delta climbs on its own and sits there. The kite we give to someone flying for the first time, with a winder and 30 metres of cotton.
Delta & birdRipstop · two 3 m ribbon tails
Fourteen stripes of colour and two long tails that write in the sky. Steady in a gentle wind, lively when it picks up.
Delta & birdRipstop · flexing wings
A white bird with wings that flex and beat as the wind changes. From the ground it is hard to tell from the real thing.
Charkhi & kitsTurned teak · 1,000 m plain cotton
A turned teak charkhi wound with a thousand metres of plain six-ply cotton thread. No glass, no metal, no nylon — just string that flies and breaks clean by hand.
Charkhi & kitsThree tails · 2, 3 and 5 m
Three ripstop ribbon tails that clip to any delta or soft kite: more tail for a gusty day, less for a calm one, and a lot of colour either way.
Charkhi & kitsTwenty patang · charkhi · cotton · tails
Everything for a day on the roof: twenty mixed patang, a charkhi with 1,000 metres of cotton, a roll of paper tape for repairs and a bag of tassels.
Nothing in this family right now.
Glass-coated manja cuts hands, birds and people riding under it. We do not sell it and we do not wind it on our charkhis. Every spool here is plain cotton, twisted and lightly waxed — strong enough to fly, easy to break by hand if it tangles.
Six-ply cotton thread, waxed. No powdered glass, no metal, no nylon line.
If a line catches on a tree or a wire, a firm pull snaps it, so it never stays up there as a trap.
Birds fly early and late. We fly between nine and five during the festival, and we ask you to as well.
Four steps, all by hand, on the floor of our front room.
A straight bamboo spine and a bent bamboo bow, split and shaved until they flex just enough.
Tissue paper cut to a diamond, folded over the frame and pasted at the edges with rice paste.
A second colour for the moon or the heart, and a small paper tail that keeps it from spinning.
The bridle is tied at two points and balanced by eye and by hand. This knot decides how the kite flies.
The workshop is the blue door in Desai ni Pol. Come and watch a patang being made, order a terrace kit for the festival, or write to us about a kite for a school or a wedding.
