Plot behind the well · picked Saturday

From the field
Mixed bag · dug and picked the same morning
A kilo of waxy potatoes with a handful of cluster beans on top — enough for one good bhaji and a little extra.
From the field
Small purple brinjal · a few chillies and capsicum
The round brinjal we grow for bharit, with green chilli and two capsicums from the same row.
Greens
Cut at first light · tied with banana fibre
Thin-stemmed spinach, cut the morning of the market and kept in wet sacking on the cart.
Greens
With the roots on
A full bunch with roots left on, so it keeps three or four days in a glass of water.
Greens
Winter only · leaves are good too
Small white turnips sold with their tops. Cook the leaves like methi and the roots in a dal.
Grain
Last season’s crop · rested six months
A short, fragrant rice from the hill fields above the village. Soft, a little sticky, made for varan-bhaat.
Grain
Pounded at home · bran left on
Red rice pounded slowly so most of the bran stays. Nutty, chewy, and it needs a longer soak.
Grain
Whole grain · cleaned by hand
The old emmer wheat our grandmother grew. Take it to your chakki, or ask and we will grind it before the market.
Dried & ground
Sun-dried on the terrace
Long, deep-red chillies with more colour than fire. Dried on the roof for a fortnight, stalks taken off.
Dried & ground
Boiled, dried and ground on the farm
Turmeric from the edge of the field, boiled, dried for weeks and ground in small lots.
Dried & ground
Our family’s mix · roasted before grinding
Coriander, chilli, cumin, a little coconut and fourteen other things, roasted on the chula and ground together.
Nothing in this crate right now.
Every order is packed on the same morning as the stall, in the same order of work.
Greens are cut first, while the leaves are cool, then whatever is ripe in the plots.
Washed at the well, tied in bunches, roots left on. Grain and masala were packed the evening before.
Four crates, the scale and the board go on the cart. Online orders ride in their own bags.
Orders are weighed on the stall scale and handed over, or sent out with a rider in the afternoon.
Look for the marigold awning near the gate. Write to us for a standing weekly order, a bulk lot of rice or a question about what is in season.
