How a mat is made

Four slow steps

From latex tapped in Kerala to a mat rolled in Mysuru, a mat takes about two weeks, most of it spent waiting.

  1. Tap

Natural latex is collected from rubber trees on small holdings in Kerala and set into sheets.

  2. Lay

Jute from Bengal is woven loose and laid over the rubber, so the two become one surface.

  3. Press

The mat is pressed and cured in batches of twenty, then trimmed to size by hand.

  4. Air

It hangs for a week in the shade to let the rubber smell soften, then is rolled and wrapped in cloth.
