The route

Kedarkantha, five camps

The winter walk we plan our gear around — from the road head at Sankri to the summit and back down through the forest.

  1. Camp 01

    Sankri

    1,920 m

The road ends at a village of wooden houses and apple orchards. Repack here — the bus roof is the last place to leave anything.

  2. Camp 02

    Juda ka Talab

    2,800 m

Up through pine and oak to a lake that freezes in December. Tents go up on the meadow before the sun drops behind the ridge.

  3. Camp 03

    Kedarkantha Base

    3,400 m

A wide clearing below the summit cone. Cold nights and early sleep; the down bag earns its weight here.

  4. Camp 04

    Kedarkantha Summit

    3,810 m

A start at three with head torches, and the top at sunrise with the whole Swargarohini range across the valley.

  5. Camp 05

    Hargaon

    3,050 m

Down through the snow to the last camp in the forest, then one long morning back to Sankri.
